Gameplay

This game was the inspiration to create Between Two Castles (together with the game Castles of Mad Kind Ludwig). Having played Between two Castles, I always was very curious for this littler one.

In Between Two Cities you and your fellow players build cities together with your/their neighbours in the form of 4*4 grids of tiles. You do this by drafting citytiles, each of them having their own way of scoring points.

As soon as the grids are completed, the city is done and the game ends. Players calculate scores moving up on the score track and the city you scored the least upon is your game end score. The player with the highest score wins the game!

Thoughts

👍 This game plays very solid and comes across like a simpler version of Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig and I really like this, it teaches quick, plays quick and is less thinky than it’s younger sibling.

👍 The game plays up to 7 players, so perfect for after dinner parties!

👍 I can imagine also #Overboss took quite some inspiration from this game, it feels almost identical to me! In Overboss however, players don't cooperate, an aspect of Between Two Cities I really enjoy. Having to work together to have the greatest City, but on the other hand also keeping your own endgame in mind. I really like how this game feels both cooperative and competitive.

👍 The components are top notch, I really like how the game includes some components you don’t necessarily need, but do add to the experience while playing.

❌ With illustrations of a younger Beth Sobel, the artwork looks good, but not great. She grew a lot since then. Overall however the game looks good.

❌The game is great fun, but light. It’s good to know that this truly is a lighter family game. If you like something more heavy, I’d suggest Between Two Castles.

Solomode

There are 2 variants available for the solomode, an easier one and one with a small automa deck that’s a bit more advanced. They both feel solid to play, my preference goes to the variant with the deck.

8/10

A copy of this game was provided to me by Stonemaier Games for the purpose of writing this review. My opinion however remains my own.
