Gameplay

In Catan players are building settlements on an unchartered land. Players collect resources and spend these to build roads, villages and cities.

On a turn, the active player rolls the dice and every player collects resources when they have a village or city located next to this number (1 for a village, 2 for a city).

After collecting possible resources, the active player has an opportunity to build something using these resources. Or they get to buy a development card, which gives a one time benefit during the game.

Once one of the players gains 10 VP, the game ends.

Thoughts

Catan is a classic. For a game that was invented in 1995, it still is thriving! So many exansions came out and people are still enjoying this game all over the world! I grew up in the Catan era and I have played SO many games, I lost count. I think Catan is an addictive game, but not without its flaws.

👍 Engaging solid gameplay. The game is easy to teach and play

👍 The eminent success the game has had over the years, the amount of expansions that came out all really show Catan is a solid game

👍 there is some serious resource management going on in this game. It can be quite addictive

➖ It’s so important where players place their first villages, it can really be unforgiving and steer the game in a certain direction.
