Gameplay
Hogwarts Battle consists of 7 games, each game representing a book in the world of Harry Potter.
Players choose 1 of 4 characters; Harry, Ron, Hermione or Neville, each coming with their own sets of cards (and as more boxes will be opened; also with special abilities!).
They then alternate turns in which they will do what the location card says, often drawing a defence against the dark arts card which has some condition, followed by playing their cards from hand attacking some opponents and gaining some new cards with influence coins.
Players continue taking turns until either the locations are claimed by the opponents (lose) or the players have neutralised the opponents before this happens (win!).
Thoughts
👍 I think it's very cool a campaign game was designed where you play in the magical world of Harry Potter. Harry Potter fans will love this game!
👍 The gameplay is fun with a simple deck building mechanism. The difficulty (and length of the games) increases as more boxes are opened, adding some new rules and cards to the game
👍 I like how there's a spot in the rulebook for new rules
👍 I love the fact that the 4 hero's join forces in a cooperative gameplay. Truly fits the theme!
👍 Photography in the artwork works really well in this game
➖ It's good to know the game starts off quite simple, this is good to play with kids or people that don't play games that much. For me the start was a bit too much on the light side. I think it's not for you if you are looking for something deep strategic, but do know the game increases difficulty!
➖ There's some luck in the game
➖ Quality of the cards is a bit so/so.
Solomode
Although this game has no solomode included, you can easily select to or more characters to play on your own. Nothing of the gameplay changes, works really well!
A copy of this game was provided to me by The OP Games for the purpose of writing this review. My opinion however remains my own.
