Gameplay

In Wingspan players are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves.

Players take turns placing one action cube on their playerboards. Above to play new bird cards, paying the food required, or in one of the three habitats; Forests, to gain food tokens; Fields, to lay eggs; and Water, to draw cards. In the habitats, after performing their main action, players get to ‘walk’ their cube over the birds, activating certain powers to be executed.

Each round there is a new goal to pursue. When the last player played all of their cubes, there is an inbetween rounds scoring in which every player leaves one cube behind, shortening the rounds towards the end of the game.

After 4 rounds players calculate scores, highest score wins the game!

Thoughts

👍 I really love the theme and how there are 170 birdcards with information of the birds on it.

👍 The gameplay feels very solid and I keep turning back to this one. I love how there are so many strategies to follow. The game is an absolute gem!

👍 I really like that the game designer of the most famous board game is a female designer, @e.hargrve

👍 Players having less cubes toward the end ensures a perfect balance between the game getting longer because of all the bird cards played and length of the rounds.

👍 The game's illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the graphic design works really well with it.

➖ I’ve never used the blue side of the goalcard.

➖ When playing with some analysis paralysis players it can take a bit on the longer side.

Solomode

The solovariant is designed by the automafactory and feels very solid. It truly is one of my favourite solo variants out there. I’ve written a seperate review on it, check it out on lottespeelt.nl!
